Tri-Arc Crystal Growth. The Tri-Arc crystal growth method is used to grow metallic crystals for fundamental research studies. The crystal is pulled from the center of molten pool of metal, the molten pool is maintained as a liquid by the electrical arc-plasma emanating the trio of tungsten electrodes. ISU and the Ames Laboratory have a long history or producing high quality single crystals for research on campus as well as for research labs throughout the world. The crystal being grown is a Gadolinium-Silicon-Germanium alloy that exhibits properties that can be exploited for magnetic refrigeration.
