This is a photo of used thermal analysis crucibles from the Ames Laboratory's Thermal Analysis Lab in Wilhelm Hall. Thermal analysis lies at the heart of metallurgical research. The results tell the story of what reactions occur in a material as the temperature increases or decreases. The results also inform us on the reversibility of these reactions. Each crucible is only 1/4" in diameter and 1/8" deep, made of white Aluminum oxide. The colors arise from reactions with elements like Chromium (red) and Cobalt (blue) contained in the sample being analyzed.
