Fluoride Eye
"Fluoride Eye" Neodymium fluoride crystals illuminated by an intense white light from underneath the center and from the top down with indoor fluorescent lamps. The color change from purple to green is due to the different spectral response of the NdF3 compound from the light sources. This high purity NdF3 was prepared at ISU's Ames Laboratory as a precursor step in the preparation of high purity neodymium metal. ISU has a long history of preparing high purity lanthanides that started with Prof. Frank Spedding.
