Gadolinium cast in a tantalum crucible, the "pupil" of the eye is a shrink-pipe formed by the change in volume as the metal solidifies. Dr. Frank Spedding and Dr. H. Wilhelm's, et al., research on the chemical separation of the lanthanides and preparation their metals led to the "industrial revolution" of rare-earth materials. ISU's Ames Laboratory has been preparing high purity Lanthanides for decades, and continues supplying them to materials scientists world-wide.
