Getting the Lead Out. This is a coil of lead free solder. Invented at Ames Laboratory and patented by ISU, ISU/Ames Laboratory's lead free solder formulation is used throughout the world in all forms of commercial electronics. Removing the lead eliminates the toxic component from the solder that would otherwise find its way into the environment when the electronics are discarded or landfilled.
