Element 64. Crystals of distilled Gadolinium metal growing toward the center of condensation head. Distillation purifies the metal, and was performed at the Materials Preparation Center at Ames Laboratory. Dr. Frank Spedding's and Dr. H. Wilhelm's, et al., research on the chemical separation of the lanthanides and preparation their metals led to the "industrial revolution" of rare-earth materials. ISU's Ames Laboratory has been preparing high purity Lanthanides for decades, and continues supplying them to materials scientists world-wide.
