Element 73 Coils of Tantalum (Ta) wire. ISU and Ames Laboratory played an important roll, circa 1950, in the development of metallurgical extraction and purification of refractory metals, bringing these valuable and useful elements to the industrial market. Tantalum is used in furnaces, chemical plants, and electronic components.
