Element 28. The nickel shot pictured is the basis for many of the magnetic metallic systems being studied by the Ames Laboratory, Critical Materials Institute, and ISU's CoE Dept. of Materials Science & Engineering. For example, research on near net shape forming of high performance AlNiCo magnets is being conducted to reduce use of rare earth elements based magnets and reduce waste by utilizing powder metallurgy production methods.
