Element 23. Electron beam melted Vanadium metal with its grain structure express by a rough polish. Ames Laboratory and ISU developed and patented methods of preparing and purifying vanadium in the 1960's. Harley A. Wilhelm, for whom Wilhelm Hall is named, is one of the patent holders. The vanadium shown here was electron beam melted at Ames Lab, the dime provides a convenient scale for examining the metal grains.
