Vacuum Casting
Vacuum Casting. An induction furnace is used to melt rare earth metals under a vacuum to distill out volatile impurities such as calcium metal and fluorine which are remnants from the metal preparation process. This photo was taken on May 17, 2016, the 69th "birthday" of the Ames Laboratory. The Ames Laboratory has been preparing high purity rare earth metals for much of its long history.
