Element 21
Element 21. Iowa has a long history in the world of rare earth metals. The "industrial revolution of rare earths" started in Iowa, on the campus of Iowa State University. Here we see scandium metal (element 21 on the periodic table) cast on a copper (element 29) hearth plate, the high purity metal is made at the Ames Laboratory, US DOE. This metal will be used as a source material in the fabrication of epitaxial thin film devices. The beads are ~8mm in diameter.
