Gadolinium Skull. In metallurgy, a "skull" is the remnant shell formed between a melt and its substrate. This skull formed as a molten stream of a Gadolinium-based alloy was poured on the center of a 2-inch disk spinning above 10,000 RPM. Metal droplets are flung off the edges forming metal powder when solidified. The process is called centrifugal atomization, which is one method used at Ames Laboratory for metal powder production.
