A peek through the view port of Ames Laboratory's centrifugal atomizer, with rotating quench bath. Induction heated liquid metal pours onto the pointed spindle while the spindle rotates at 8 to 24 thousand RPM. The rotational forces accelerate the metal and surface tension forces of the liquid break the liquid into nominal 100 µm spheres. The spheres are captured in cooled in the quench bath (large torus).
